St. Joseph's Province, Missionaries of Compassion

Care for the sick

The Ministry of Care for the Sick is at the heart of the charism of the Missionaries of Compassion. Rooted in the love and mercy of Christ, this ministry reaches out to the most vulnerable—those who suffer from illness, disability, abandonment, and the many forms of human frailty—offering them not only medical assistance, but dignity, compassion, and hope.

A Ministry Born of Love

Guided by the Gospel call to serve Christ in the poorest of the poor, the Missionaries of Compassion see every sick person as a living image of God. Illness often brings loneliness, fear, and a sense of being forgotten. Through this ministry, the sisters and their collaborators seek to be a comforting presence, reminding the sick that they are deeply loved and never alone.

Holistic Care: Body, Mind, and Spirit

The care offered goes beyond physical treatment. While basic medical attention, hygiene, nutrition, and comfort are provided according to each person’s needs, equal importance is given to emotional and spiritual support. Gentle listening, prayer, and simple acts of kindness help restore peace and inner strength to those who are suffering.

For many, the ministry becomes a place where wounds—both visible and hidden—begin to heal. The sick are encouraged to rediscover their worth, even in weakness, and to experience God’s compassion through human touch and presence.

Serving Without Distinction

The Ministry of Care for the Sick serves all people regardless of religion, background, or condition. Whether in homes for the sick and dying, hospitals, slum areas, or rural communities, the Missionaries of Compassion go wherever the need is greatest. Special attention is given to those who are abandoned, terminally ill, or unable to access proper care.

A Witness of Compassion in Action

This ministry is a living witness that love can transform suffering. By embracing the sick with tenderness and respect, the Missionaries of Compassion proclaim that every life has value, even in its most fragile moments. Their service speaks silently but powerfully of God’s mercy, inspiring others to respond with compassion in their own families and communities.

An Invitation to Serve

The Ministry of Care for the Sick also invites lay volunteers, benefactors, and healthcare professionals to share in this mission. Through time, talent, prayer, or resources, many can participate in bringing comfort and hope to those who suffer.

In caring for the sick, the Missionaries of Compassion continue a sacred mission—touching wounds with love, carrying light into places of pain, and revealing the compassionate heart of God to the world.
